John Hasyn
They said “You have a blue guitar,
You do not play things as they are.”
The man replied, “Things as they are
Are changed upon the blue guitar.

about me

I began playing the guitar at the age of twelve, annoying the neighbours with a cacophony of sounds played on a home-made electric guitar wired into an old FM radio speaker. At sixteen, I found myself most weekends sitting in the back of an old rusty van travelling to “working men’s clubs” in the north of England and playing rhythm guitar in an Eagles cover band. When the van finally broke down for good and more serious (??) things took over, like study and work, my guitar did not see the light of day for twenty-odd years.

When I did pick up the guitar again in my early forties, I decided I wanted to learn how to improvise and play jazz. Many years later and teachers that have included Freddie Bryant, Brian Katz, Jimmy Bruno, and Martin Taylor, I continue to play my improvised sounds in a variety of settings, but hopefully more musically than I did when I was twelve. I have also added acoustic upright bass to my instrument repertoire and my teachers on this instrument have included Cameron Brown and Marcus McLaurine.

my photographs

I believe that creativity is important to health and well-being regardless of the form it takes. In addition to my musical explorations, I have had a keen interest in photography since I bought an old Russian made camera from a pawn shop at the age of fifteen. I have travelled far and wide since then.
